The type of extinguishers you need depends on the specific hazards identified in your Fire Risk Assessment. A standard office typically requires a combination of Water or Foam extinguishers for organic materials (Class A) and CO2 extinguishers for electrical risks. However, if you have a commercial kitchen, you will also need Wet Chemical (Class F) extinguishers. FMSG provides a full site survey to ensure you have the correct “extinguishing media” for every room in your building, complying with BS 5306-8.
To remain compliant with BS 5306-3, all fire extinguishers must undergo a basic service at least once every 12 months by a “competent person.” Additionally, most extinguishers require an “Extended Service” or “Overhaul” every 5 to 10 years (depending on the type) to ensure the internal lining and propellant are still functional. FMSG provides a managed service schedule, including the supply of loan units, to ensure your premises are never left unprotected during maintenance.
While you can purchase units online, they must be commissioned on-site by a qualified technician to be legally compliant. Commissioning involves checking for transit damage, weighing the unit, and ensuring it is correctly mounted on a bracket or stand with the appropriate ID signage. An un-commissioned extinguisher may fail to operate in an emergency and will not be recognised by fire inspectors or insurance providers as a valid safety measure.
